Lions raise funds in many different ways in order that local good causes can be supported. Here are a few ways in which Wisbech Lions Club raises money.
Wisbech Rose Fair
During the Wisbech Rose Fair in July we pay to take a stall, usually for four days and set up our Tombola and other games. This is our first outing at the start of each new Lions year.
Parsons Drove Classic Car and Motorcycle Show
We are often asked to take control of the car parking at this event and also set up our Gazebo where members set up games and Tombola giving visitors a chance to enjoy themselves and take home prizes.
Wisbech Rock Festival
We usually put up our gazebo at this popular event and offer a selection of games and chances to win prizes and raise funds.
Bygones Meal Raffle
For many years we have been invited to hold one or two, monthly meal raffles with meal prizes offered by this popular Wisbech café. This involves customers placing a £1 coin in an envelope with a prize draw for the winning envelopes.
Jolly Fryer Meal Raffle
This popular fish and chip location is the site of another meal raffle with prizes offered by the owners. Again this involves £1 in an envelope and selection usually in about three weeks.
We are often invited to set up our gazebo in The Horsefair as part of the Spooktacular events in the town. We decorate the tables with spooky things and set up our games. Certain Lions have been known to be more spooky than normal on this occasion!
We hold a competition for Lions members and invited guests where they display their skills at playing Conkers. We provide a buffet fit for Conkerors! A good night where the entry fee and cost of meals helps raise funds for a specific purpose decided at the time.
Wisbech Christmas Light Switch On
We got the Santa Sleigh PAT tested and roadworthy before taking it out on its first run into town. We put the sleigh and our well known Lion Santa in the Market Square and watch as the magic begins. Many people young and old visit to say hello and this helps raise funds in the buckets provided. Each child usually leaves with a bag of sweets often provided by funds from a local benefactor and the Town Council.
Santa Sleigh Runs
We usually do 6 or 7 sleigh runs setting off at 530pm and finishing at 730pm. We apply for Fenland District Council permits in plenty of time to enable us to conduct House to House collections. Every year we are amazed at the generosity of the people of Wisbech. We often have children giving 12months savings to our Charity collection. We also fit in extra personal visits for some special young people who we may have helped over the years.
Christmas Sleigh Statics – Supermarkets
Every year we set up the sleigh with Santa from about 9am – 5pm at Morrisons, Tesco and Asda. Whatever the weather we are usually in position for the youngsters (and the not so young) to visit us and often to leave us a donation in the collection boxes.
Santa on Zoom
This was a new experience in 2020 and one that we hope to be able to do again. Our Santa was fortunate enough to have a good connection with Toni Bird, the fundraising coordinator for The Alan Hudson Centre in Wisbech. That led to an agreement to do a joint fundraising initiative where our Santa did the Zoom calls to families who contacted Toni who dealt with all administration.
New in 2020, our Lion Santa put together a series of videos, one for The Luxe Cinema that was played to audiences ahead of children’s films. Other videos were filmed for schools, care homes and businesses.
Wisbech Lions Christmas Cards
In 2020 one of our local photographer contacts Adam Fairbrother suggested that Christmas Cards featuring our Santa would be a good way to generate income. Adam took three photographs and this did prove to be a very good fundraising initiative. Small cards were sold and larger ones were available with personal greetings from Santa and hand delivered by a good friend of Wisbech Lions to recipients ahead of Christmas. This initiative received great Press coverage from our Fenland Citizen and Wisbech Standard. We could do this again in 2021 and have been offered outlets for sale of the cards, including Bygones and The Luxe Cinema.
We applied for Charitable status with Facebook for our Wisbech Lions Club public page and once this was granted in 2020 it enabled us to set up fundraising pages.
We are often to be found in The Horsefair on Valentine’s Day with the Centre Manager. Funds from a fundraiser are then given to the Club as a donation.
Traditionally for many years we have purchased a number of large Easter Eggs and these are delivered to about 25 pubs / restaurants where 100 raffle tickets are sold for the prize draw before Easter.
This popular event takes place in the Market Square and we erect our gazebo and set up games to have fun and raise money.
Car Boot sales
We have some members who collect items for car boot sales, many donated.
Our Health and Safety Officer, Lion Robert Pearson undertakes Risk Assessments ahead of all events. We are insured by Lions Clubs International and all members are DBS checked.
We have registered Wisbech Lions Club on Pay Pal Giving Fund for donations. This method also allows for Gift Aid.
